Praise be to Allāh!
(155. And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sābirin (the patient).)
(156. Who, when afflicted with calamity, say:
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
ʾinnā li-llāhi wa-ʾinnā ʾilayhi rājiʿūn
“Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.”)
(157. They are those on whom are the Salawāt (i.e., who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His mercy, and it is they who are the guided ones.)
Do you know what prayers Muslims recite after hearing the news of a death?
Praise be to Allāh!
When afflicted with a calamity, the Muslims recite the ʾIstirjāʿ…in Surah No.2, Suratul Baqarah, Allāh, the Almighty Says,
The reward for reciting ʾIstirjāʿ:
There are several Ahadith that mention the rewards of admitting that the return is to Allah by saying: ʾinnā li-llāhi wa-ʾinnā ʾilayhi rājiʿūn
(“Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.”) when afflictions strike.
For instance, Imam Ahmad reported that Umm Salamah narrated:
Once, Abu Salamah came back after he was with Allah’s Messenger ﷺ and said: I heard Allah’s Messenger recite a statement that made me delighted. He said:(No Muslim is struck with an affliction and then says Istirja` when the affliction strikes, and then says:
إِنَّا لِله وإنَّا إلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيْبَتي، وأخْلِفْ لِي خَيْراً مِنْهَا
Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. Allahumma-jurni fi musibati, wa akhlif li khairan minha
`O Allah! Reward me for my loss and give me what is better than it,’ but Allah will do just that.) Umm Salamah said: So I memorized these words. When Abu Salamah died I said Istirja` and said: “O Allah! Compensate me for my loss and give me what is better than it.” I then thought about it and said, “Who is better than Abu Salamah” When my `Iddah (the period of time before the widow or divorced woman can remarry) finished, Allah’s Messenger ﷺ asked for permission to see me while I was dyeing a skin that I had. I washed my hands, gave him permission to enter and handed him a pillow, and he sat on it.
He then asked me for marriage and when he finished his speech, I said, “O Messenger of Allah! It is not because I do not want you, but I am very jealous and I fear that you might experience some wrong mannerism from me for which Allah would punish me. I am old and have children.” He said: (As for the jealousy that you mentioned, Allah the Exalted will remove it from you. As for your being old as you mentioned, I have suffered what you have suffered. And for your having children, they are my children too.) She said, “I have surrendered to Allah’s Messenger.” Allah’s Messenger married her and Umm Salamah said later, “Allah compensated me with who is better than Abu Salamah: Allah’s Messenger .’ [ Muslim reported a shorter version of this Hadith]
When offering condolences to the bereaved, it is highly recommended to use the words spoken by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to his daughter
Narrated Usama bin Zaid: The daughter of the Prophet (ﷺ) sent (a messenger) to the Prophet (ﷺ) requesting him to come as her child was dying (or was gasping), but the Prophet (ﷺ) returned the messenger and told him to convey his greeting to her and say: "Whatever Allah takes is for Him and whatever He gives, is for Him, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world) and so she should be patient and hope for Allah's reward."
She again sent for him, swearing that he should come. The Prophet (ﷺ) got up, and so did Sa`d bin 'Ubada, Mu`adh bin Jabal, Ubai bin Ka`b, Zaid bin Thabit and some other men. The child was brought to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) while his breath was disturbed in his chest (the sub-narrator thinks that Usama added: ) as if it was a leather water-skin. On that the eyes of the Prophet (ﷺ) started shedding tears. Sa`d said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! What is this?" He replied, "It is mercy which Allah has lodged in the hearts of His slaves, and Allah is merciful only to those of His slaves who are merciful (to others). [Sahih al-Bukhari 1284]
Further,
1
Imam ash-Shafa‘i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There are no specific words for offering condolences."(Al-Umm 1/317).
2
Ibn Qudamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We do not know of any specific words for offering condolences…"(Al-Mughni 2/212).
3
Shaykh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There are no specific phrases for offering condolences; rather the Muslim may offer condolences to his brother with whatever appropriate words he can, such as saying: “May Allah comfort you, compensate your loss and forgive your deceased loved one,” if the deceased was a Muslim."(Majmu‘ al-Fatawa 13/380).
4
Shaykh al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He may offer condolences to them in whatever words he thinks will comfort them, help them to cope with their grief and encourage them to be content and patient, from words that have been soundly narrated from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), if he knows them and can call them to mind. Otherwise, he may say whatever he can of kind words that will achieve the purpose and are not contrary to Islamic teachings."(Ahkam al-Jana’iz 1/163).
